Oldham Adult Speech & Language Therapy Service
The Adult Speech and Language Therapy service provides assessment, diagnosis and treatment for adults with acquired communication or swallowing problems. We also provide therapy to people with voice problems.
The service is provided to adults registered with an Oldham GP, and we work closely with other teams to provide a patient-centred service.
The service is provided in clinic, at home or in residential and nursing homes. Acquired communication and swallowing problems may be caused by neurological conditions such as stroke, Parkinson`s disease, brain injury, dementia, head and neck cancer or other progressive illnesses.
We also provide training to other healthcare professionals, carers and care workers to improve patient care and interdisciplinary working. We have an open referral system for people with communication problems. Referrals for assessment of swallowing difficulties must be from a GP or other qualified health professional. According to Royal College guidelines, referrals for voice must include an up to date ENT report.
