Our new £5m psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU) in Tameside has been named Walkerwood by patients and staff.

Pennine Care staff in the garden area of the new PICUOpening soon, the unit will support men experiencing mental health distress.

Named after a local beauty spot, it aims to reflect the therapy-based recovery approach that’ll be offered to patients, including access to an on-site gym, therapy kitchen, garden, and activity space.

Once patients have moved into the new unit, the current Stockport PICU (Cobden Unit) will be refurbished for women needing psychiatric intensive care. It’s been named Woodbank after a nearby historical park and is expected to open in spring 2023.
