We’re working to reduce racial inequalities in mental health care and to improve experiences for patients and carers from diverse communities.

This is part of the patient and carer race equality framework (known as ‘PCREF’), a national initiative from NHS England.

Through this, we will be working closer with communities and other organisations who deliver care, listening to patient and carer feedback, and building cultural awareness across our services.

We’re also proud to be chosen for a pilot to strengthen support for racially marginalised carers, which launches during Carers Week (8 – 14 June 2026).

This will link the existing work to the Triangle of Care, a nationally recognised scheme led by Carers Trust.

The Triangle of Care means patients, unpaid carers (family members or friends), and healthcare staff working together to support a person’s care, promoting safety, recovery and wellbeing. This includes ensuring carers are included, informed and supported throughout the care journey.

The pilot will support mental health providers to create practical guidance to improve how unpaid carers from racially marginalised communities are identified, involved and supported.

Three of our services will be taking part; Tatton unit, Oldham mental health support team, and Stockport older people’s specialist mental health team.

Ben, Emma, Winsom.jpgBen Woffenden, head of patient and carer experience and engagement, said: "We’re delighted to have been selected for this pilot, building on the progress we’ve made with the patient and carer race equality framework to improve mental health care and the experiences of people from diverse communities."

Dr Emma Koivunen, carer experience lead, added: "Carers are vital partners in care for their friends, family and loved ones. This opportunity will help us recognise, involve and support carers in ways that are more inclusive and culturally informed, working alongside community partners.”
