The objective is to improve and enhance service delivery for service users and their carers in an environment that recognises the need for a gender sensitive approach to enable the women to undertake an active role in their recovery.
The women need genuinely to feel at the heart of this process and the real test will be that they feel better served by the mental health care system in terms of their individual experience. A multi-disciplinary approach to care is adopted, which focus on the needs of the individual service user and aims towards rehabilitation and reintegration in a model of inclusion.
The service users are typically difficult to engage; poorly responsive to treatment and more likely to receive/adapt to programmes of treatment.
They may also have associated co-morbid post-traumatic disorders or personality difficulties and significant attachment disorders.
Aggression and or self harm may be a characteristic. They may have a secondary diagnosis of personality disorder and may present with challenging behaviour, have a history of illicit substance misuse and also have an index offence and be subject to a treatment and/or detention order by the ministry of Justice.
They have a history of vulnerability and exploitation in mixed gender settings. They have been assessed as requiring a 2 year period of rehabilitation.
