Cobden Unit - Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (Stockport)

The PICU aims to provide a service for patients suffering from serious mental illness (psychosis and severe mood disorders), whilst maintaining the balance of safety and therapy to ensure the safety of patients, staff and visitors.

This is achieved by using best available knowledge, resources and integration of evidence-based practice. Our aim is to provide a multidisciplinary approach to care focusing upon the needs of service users and their families.

The Cobden unit is a 10 bedded male Psychiatric Intensive Care Facility, which serves the population of Rochdale, Bury, Oldham, Tameside and Stockport. The Unit acts as the gate keeping facility for all PICU placements, including Women’s PICU services, within the Pennine Care footprint.

The primary function of the unit is to provide short-term, intensive, assessment and treatment for those patients who cannot be safely managed on a general psychiatric acute ward.

The Cobden Team practices a multi-professional approach to treatments which includes patient involvement and provides individualised and holistically planned care. The Cobden Team assists individuals to achieve their optimum level of independence, functioning, wellbeing and recognise that each individual has the need and the right to be treated with dignity and respect at all times.

The multi-disciplinary team is committed to the principles of working in a non-judgmental manner with due regard given to the individual’s religious and cultural beliefs, gender, ethnic background, age, sexual orientation and/or disability.

There are a variety of admission pathways into the unit; these include referrals directly from the community, general psychiatric wards, 136 suites, Police cells, Courts and transfers from Prisons.

Typically, service users who are admitted to the Cobden unit, display challenging behaviours, and pose significant risk to self or others in the context of a serious mental disorder.
