Norbury Ward (Stockport)
We are a 23-bedded adult acute in-patient ward for males and females between the ages of 18-65. Individuals have their own bedrooms with single sex washing/ toilet facilities. We provide assessment, care and treatment of individuals with a variety of mental health needs. Patients are admitted via A & E assessments, Mental Health Act assessments in the home, referrals from Access & Crisis Team and Home Treatment Team or from outpatient clinics. They are admitted due to experiencing a deterioration in their mental health, relapse of a mental health illness or at times of crisis (relating to mental health issues).
We offer 24 hour care from a team of health professionals including:- nursing staff, medical staff, occupational therapist and a recovery and inclusion worker.
We offer a variety of treatment and interventions including:- medication, Electro-convulsive therapy (ECT), regular 1-1 input from a named nurse to plan and evaluate care (including discharge planning), physical health screening and a programme of ward based activities which give service users the opportunity to engage in meaningful, enjoyable activities. Activities enable individuals to build on current skills, learn new skills and can be a distraction from symptoms as well as a sociable experience.
Norbury Ward offers an Occupational Therapy (OT) Service. The OT works with service users with specific needs to assess how mental illness impacts on their ability to function in their everyday occupations and roles, and assists service users to maximise independence in their daily occupations and life roles. The OT aims to help service users to recover and prevent re-admission to hospital.
A Recovery and Inclusion Worker links the recovery work carried out on the ward with the social inclusion aspect of a patient's overall care. This could include support to engage in meaningful activities in the community or home visits to sort out important issues.
We also offer housing, welfare rights and advocacy drop in sessions on the ward.
