CAMHS inpatient services

Here you can read more about our inpatient Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services.

Hope Unit

Opened in 2008, the Hope Unit provides an acute psychiatric inpatient service for young people.

The 12-bedded unit was developed to ensure that young people receive the treatment they need in an age appropriate environment that is suitable for their needs, following the Mental Health Act 2007 amendments. The unit provides intensive assessment and treatment for young people with mental illness or psychiatric disorder, for which enhanced community treatment is no longer viable or safe. This can include patients detained under the Mental Health Act.

A young person’s length of stay on the Hope Unit is around four to six weeks but this will vary depending on the individual’s needs.

Horizon Unit

Opened in 2010, the Horizon Unit was developed to complement and enhance our ability to support young people with complex mental health problems.

The 10-bedded unit provides complex care to young people that have severe or enduring mental health difficulties, including those who require high dependency care.

The unit provides a responsive inpatient service for young people aged 13 to 18, treating a full range of complex mental health or psychiatric disorders, that can no longer be safely managed in the community or that need extended assessment or treatment. This includes young people who are detained under the Mental Health Act, Children’s Act or those who are admitted on an informal basis.

The service provides a safe environment coupled with therapeutic interventions. The focus of the service is the rehabilitation of young people with complex and enduring mental health needs that often co-exist with a significant level of social difficulties, risk to themselves and others.

The Woodland Retreat

The Woodland Retreat provides young people with a truly unique experience where they can be introduced to relaxation and learning as part of the team’s therapeutic approach.

Set in the natural woodland next to the Hope and Horizon Units, the Woodland Retreat was the first of its kind in the UK – a 40 metre wooden treehouse, complete with decked area, barbeque and allotment.

The lodge can be used as an extension of our on-site educational facilities. Here the young people can learn about the natural environment, take in some fresh air, and enjoy the tranquillity of this outside space.

Providing a peaceful space away from the normal clinical setting aims to enhance the treatment and personal experience of the young people by helping to reduce stress and tension.
