Pennine Care became a Foundation Trust (FT) in 2008 and was the 100th FT in the country. The main difference is that foundation trusts are run locally and therefore able to work with communities to develop services that meet the needs of local people.
As a foundation trust, we are free to decide how to best meet the health needs of the people we serve, are accountable to local people, have greater financial freedom and can be more flexible, allowing us to improve our services, innovate and develop new services, and to recruit and retain staff.
To ensure we are run and managed effectively, the FT has three levels of governance:
- Membership - made up of local people, patients and their carers, and staff. We actively encourage our local population to get involved and become members so that our diverse communities are represented.
- Council of Governors - chaired by the Trust Chairman, and comprising elected members of the public and staff, plus representatives from partner organisations. They are responsible for ensuring the views of the member community are considered in decisions about how we spend our money and how we develop our services.
- Board of Directors - made up of a Chairman, a Chief Executive, Executive Directors and Non-Executive Directors
The Board of Directors is responsible for ensuring the Trust is properly run, provides good services and meets the requirements of the independent regulator, Monitor.
